As an international student, studying in Australia, you also have the option of working while you’re abroad. Working, or undertaking a part time internship in Australia is a great way to gain experience in your chosen field with an International or local business.
As a matter of fact, over 30% of international students are involved in part time work and receive income during their studies. Another way to gain experience is through a volunteer program, which can look really good on a resume and will broaden your knowledge in a particular area. Remember, you can never learn less.
When applying for work, another obstacle to consider, is the amount of contact hours you’ll be required to complete with the University, school, TAFE or Institute you’re completing your course with.
Its important to make sure you’re grades don’t dwindle, because you’ve taken on more responsibility with working. As long as you remain focused on your studies, this shouldn’t be a problem. Majority of University, school, and TAFE campuses will have a Career Development Office or Program, which is a good place to go for assistance when looking for part time work, and advice on job applications in Australia.

Another option is to take up a casual part time job, allowing you to devote yourself to studies, and earning a bit of extra money for holidays, weekends, and other extra-curricular activities. These jobs can include anything from working in a restaurant, retail assistant jobs, nanny and babysitting jobs, and tutoring younger students. Regardless of your personal strengths and skills, there’s bound to be casual work that would suit you.
These jobs can earn anything from $6 - $15 per hour, depending on your age and the type of work you’re doing. Generally, if you decide you can work weekends and public holidays your pay will increase. Remember, you’re only able to work in Australia if you have a current and valid working visa.
